The Common Rooms - visit
The Common Rooms
[Booking for Hackney Society members from 22nd October 2026; for guests/non-members from 29th October.]
Artefact are hosting an architect-led tour of The Common Rooms, a new grassroots community space for people of all backgrounds to come together in the north-eastern corner of Hackney. The tour starts on Clapton Common, with a short walk to the Rooms.
Access to public and social spaces is vital to community cohesion and our collective wellbeing, yet in London these spaces are in short supply. Clapton Commons charity, rooted in the ancient tradition of common land and the concept of the common good, was created to address the lack of community spaces in Stamford Hill, building a network of local people that participate in the production and management of spaces for people to come together. They commissioned Artefact to reimagine the disused undercroft of Grade II listed St Thomas’ Church into an uplifting place for all. It is now used for everything from communal meals and exercise classes to parties and workshops.
The tour will be led by Artefact director Daniel Marmot.
St Thomas’ Church will be open for us to visit after the tour.
We will begin with a walk from Clapton Common to the church. Meet at Liberty Hall, 128 Clapton Common, London, E5 9AA for an 11:00 start. The event will end at about 12:30pm.
