Join our group walk through the former grounds of Hackney’s Loddiges Nursery and learn how their tropical plant trading in East London transformed landscapes across the world.

Accompanied with maps, collage illustrations and stories, we will explore the lost botanical world of this renowned Nursery and its spectacular Palm House. We will hear from the plants themselves: about their journeys from distant homelands to London’s East End docks and the plant hunters whose worldwide expeditions brought them here. Along the way, we will share observations and stories, as we discover how this Nursery connected Hackney to worldwide networks of plant trading during the 1700’s and 1800’s. The walk's route also takes us through contemporary public gardens that feature as a “living museum”, with their array of flowers, shrubs and trees originally imported into the UK during the same era.

This walk is being offered as part of the local E8 Art Trail, which takes place on November 28th and 29th.

The walking event lead, Catherine Harrington, is a local artist and is presenting artworks based on her research-based art project called “Migrating Plant Stories” at 195 Mare Street, London E8 3QE. See https://www.e8artandcrafttrail.co.uk/ for more details of this work and all participating E8 Art Trail artists. For more about Catherine, visit her website https://www.catherineharrington.org/
