Hackney Buildings and People BOOK LAUNCH
Join us for the launch of Hackney Buildings and People, by architect Gordon Shrigley, a book exploring the distinctive character of contemporary architecture in Hackney over the past 25 years.
Through fifteen buildings and one boat, the book examines the emergence of a particular architectural approach shaped by local history, materials and urban context. It introduces the idea of mute modernism, an architecture that responds to the character of the city while remaining unmistakably contemporary.
The book includes work by 6a, Adam Khan, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, David Chipperfield, Denizen Works, Erbar Mattes, Foster + Partners, Hawkins\Brown, Henley Halebrown, John Pawson, Make, Sergison Bates, Steven Taylor, Surman Weston, Waugh Thistleton and Witherford Watson Mann and street photography by Emmanuel Cole.
The evening will include a roundtable discussion with architects Lisa Shell and Gordon Shrigley, and Hackney Society trustee Ewa Effiom, chaired by Rob Briggs, exploring the question: Does Hackney have its own architectural style?
