Since the early electro-pop days of the 1980s, Heaven 17 has been influencing the shape of modern music. They’ve also created some classics in their own right, with albums like Penthouse and Pavement and The Luxury Gap and hit singles including (We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang, Temptation and Come Live with Me. Famous for embracing genres and admired performers onto their own recordings, the band has worked with Sandie Shaw, Tina Turner, Jools Holland and many others. Heaven 17 have continued to tour throughout the 2010s and we’re thrilled they’ll be here again at Hampton Pool for the opening evening of our summer concerts.
What people say
“The charismatic Heaven 17 frontman Glenn Gregory always knows how to get the crowd going and this evening he was no different from when I have previously had the pleasure of witnessing them live. To say that they went down well would be an understatement!” Brighton & Hove News website 27 Oct 2019
“An exuberant set from Heaven 17” Metro News Oct 28 2019
Described as “the Temptations in ripped jeans” by one rock critic, the Liverpool band’s infectious melodies and warm harmonies had a deep emotional undercurrent. Feeding on accusations, protest, despair and even self-doubt, their “socially aware soul” made a big impact on the complacent music scene of the late 80s.
Their 1987 double-platinum debut album, The Christians, entered the album chart at No.2 and featured the Top 30 singles Forgotten Town, Hooverville, Ideal World and Born Again. In 1988, they released a cover of the Isley Brothers’ Harvest for the World, with all proceeds going to British Third-World charities. Their second album, Colour, was released in 1990 and went to No.1 in the album chart and contained the successful single Words.
What people say
“Gary Christian’s vocals are extraordinary, he’s one of the best soul voices to come out of Britain, and when he invited the audience to their feet on several occasions during the show to clap along all willingly obliged.” Blues & Soul Review
