Memento Mori: An Exploration of Death's Many Faces
Memento Mori translates to "Remember that you must die," and while it may sound morose, there's also a comfort in knowing that death is one of the few things in this world that we all eventually have in common with each other.
Join me, bass-baritone Hans Tashjian, and pianist Anna Keiserman for a recital centered around a subject that has fascinated humanity for as long as humanity has existed: Death.
One might expect this to be an evening of dark and fearsome music, but in putting this performance together, I became fascinated by the many different ways death is treated by poets and composers. Over the course of the performance, death is portrayed as cruel and scary, yes, but also kind, peaceful, loving, merciful, seductive, out of reach, and even humorous.
So take a break from Mariah Carey, escape the inescapable yuletide songs, and join Anna and me for some beautiful music by Schubert, Wagner, Kabalevsky, Mussorgsky, Mahler, and more.
