WAR ON SCREEN

War on Screen brings together filmmakers, film professionals, and experts from across the region to discuss how cinema has shaped our understanding of war, memory, and responsibility over the past three decades. Thirty years after the end of the Yugoslav wars, the panel explores how films produced from the post-war period to the present have challenged silence, opened spaces for dialogue, and confronted audiences with subjects that long remained on the margins of public and political discourse.

The discussion will focus on the responsibility of filmmakers who engage with trauma, war crimes, memory, and the legacy of conflict in the states that emerged from the breakup of Yugoslavia — a region where the past continues to profoundly shape the present. Do unresolved questions from the past burden cinema, or do they, on the contrary, provide it with additional social and artistic relevance? To what extent can film serve as a space of resistance, fostering empathy and encouraging critical reflection on history?

Moving beyond the former Yugoslav region, the panel will also examine how cinema engages with contemporary global conflicts and humanitarian crises. In recent years, films addressing war, occupation, displacement, migration, and human rights have achieved significant international recognition while generating important public debates. How important is that visibility? Can film have a tangible historical and social impact?

In this context, The Voice of Hind Rajab and the Academy Award-winning documentary No Other Land, both featured in the HARMLESS Film Festival programme, raise an important question: can cinema be more than testimony? Can it become an act of resistance, a document of its time, and a tool for collective reckoning?

War on Screen is a conversation about film as a space of memory, responsibility, and the possibility that, thirty years after one war, we may better understand both our own past and the world around us.

*The panel is organized by HARMLESS Film Festival in cooperation with the Vojvodina Civic Centre and Pro Peace Belgrade.
