Haxan (1922) may be one of the most strange and shocking films ever made. What is it exactly? A silent documentary about witchcraft? An “essay film” about satanic panic? A pastiche of vignettes about the persecution of women? A psychedelic fever dream about sexual repression? None of these descriptions seem to do it justice. It is best to just watch it with an open mind and let the flood of images wash over you.

Not So Silent Cinema has been playing live music for silent films since 2010. They boast over 15 carefully crafted scores for various silent classic. Not So Silent Cinema is pleased to return to Harmonie Hall with their score for Haxan. The performance features composer and music director Brendan Cooney on piano, Carlos Santiago and Liz Carlson on violins and Chris Coyle on bass.
