Tue Sep 17, 2024 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Description
*This workshop is offered for registered convention attendees!*
Experience Hawai‘i Island on an immersive bus tour – grounded in a regenerative tourism model through a kānaka maoli lens. Visit the sacred and culturally rich sites of Kalāhuipua‘a Historical Park, Pu‘ukoholā Heiau National Historic Site, and Māhukona, where we embrace the principles of regenerative tourism. This journey is not just about seeing these extraordinary places but about engaging with them in a way that honors their history, environment, and the communities that cherish them.
Kalāhuipua‘a Historical Park: Begin your adventure at the ancient fishponds of Kalahuipuaa, a place where the wisdom of Native Hawaiian aquaculture comes to life. Here, you’ll witness the intricate relationship between the land, water, and people, and learn how these practices continue to sustain the local ecosystem. Engage in activities that contribute to the restoration and preservation of these historic ponds, ensuring they remain vibrant for generations to come.
Pu‘ukoholā Heiau National Historic Site: Pu‘ukoholā Heiau is one of the last major sacred structures built in Hawai‘i before Western contact. This towering stone temple, built by King Kamehameha the Great, holds profound cultural significance.
Mahukona: Mahukona is a historic training ground for traditional Hawaiian navigators. The lands include hundreds of ancient cultural sites including Koʻa Heiau Holomoana, an ancient site of worship revered by navigators from all over the Pacific. Today, the nonprofit Nā Kalai Waʻa teaches the next generation of navigators at Mahukona, and drydocks the Hawaiian sailing canoe, Makaliʻi on site.
Throughout this tour, we’ll not only explore these remarkable sites but also actively contribute to their preservation, fostering a deeper connection between visitors and the land. By the end of the day, you’ll leave not just with memories but with the knowledge that you’ve played a part in ensuring the sustainability and vitality of these precious places.
Cost: $30. Seats are limited. Bento lunch included.
Participants should be able to walk on unpaved terrain. Covered shoes recommended. Bring sunscreen, hat, and water.
