Sankta Lucia in Hexham 2025

Hexham Abbey will once again be bathed in candlelight for Sankta Lucia - a breathtaking traditional Scandinavian event celebrating light in the darkest month of the year.

Doors open at 6.30pm for welcome drinks and cinnamon rolls. The Sankta Lucia performance starts at 7pm.

The Edinburgh Luciakör will perform traditional Scandinavian inspired seasonal songs followed by the stunning traditional Sankta Lucia performance. This magical event sees Lucia processing around the darkened Abbey wearing a crown of candles. She is followed by the rest of the choir dressed in white gowns, carrying candles, singing traditional Swedish songs.

Sankta Lucia is a well-established event in the Swedish calendar leading up to Christmas. It originates from both pagan and Christian traditions of bringing people together for music, nourishment, and celebration of light. It's a delightful, relaxing event to enjoy in the lead up to Christmas.  

This year, all ticket holders will enjoy traditional cinnamon rolls and glögg before the ceremony. These are included in the ticket price. A non-alcoholic drinks option can be requested during the booking process. The cinnamon rolls will be freshly made by the brilliant Hextol Foundation.

Sankta Lucia is being brought to Hexham Abbey by Hexham Community Partnership. Hexham is the only place in the North of England to be hosting the Edinburgh Luciakör for this unique event.

Please note seating is unreserved for this event and some seats have a restricted view. 

Please note that, due to the special nature of the event, latecomers cannot be admitted. Toddlers and babies on laps can attend for free and do not need a ticket. 

The running time for Sankta Lucia is approx one hour.
