The Joys and Challenges of Butterfly Photography

Sat May 11, 2024 9:30 AM - 11:30 AM CDT Headwaters at the Comal, 78130

PROGRAM:

Join us for an in-depth workshop exploring butterfly photography in the wild. Grace Scalzo will discuss the challenges and suggest solutions to photographing beautiful, flighty butterflies. She will share her thoughts on light, plants, backgrounds, colors, ethics, equipment choices, and creativity, including ideas on how to turn your photos into pleasing art. Note that while we will focus on butterflies, the ideas presented also apply to photographing birds, insects, and mammals.

These concepts will apply to all types of cameras, including cell phones. It is assumed that participants have a basic working knowledge of their gear, as this session will be about field technique, improving your photographic vision, and looking for opportunities, and will not go in-depth on the technical aspects of photography.

The slideshow presentation will be followed by a Q&A session. We'll conclude with a walk around the beautiful Headwaters, where you will seek ways to put your new ideas into practice with Grace's guidance.

PRESENTER:

It is with gratitude and appreciation for the outdoors that Grace Scalzo creates her photographs. Her favorite subjects are birds, butterflies, and mammals.

Grace’s images have been recognized and published by NANPA (North American Nature Photography Association), "Nature's Best" magazine, "Texas Wildlife Wire," the American Bird Conservancy, Texas A&M Natural Resources Institute, and the Texas Blue Bird Society. She has authored several children’s books and is a frequent speaker for photography clubs and library programs, sharing with people how to improve their skills by combining solid field techniques and photography basics.

Grace resides in Spring Branch, Texas, with her husband, Ted. They are managing their land for the benefit of wildlife under a plan approved by the State of Texas. Under their stewardship, it will never be divided or developed, and the wildlife who live here will have a safe and quiet place.
