Botanical Watercolor Workshop

Experience the beauty of nature through art in this beginner-friendly watercolor class with local artist Andrea Patton. Students will learn foundational watercolor techniques, including washes such as wet-into-wet and wet-into-dry techniques. We will also discuss watercolor paper, paintbrushes, color mixing, and other essential skills that build confidence with the medium.

Along the way, we'll practice painting petals, leaves, and other botanical elements inspired by the natural world around us. Our final project will be a watercolor painting of Texas native flowers.  Students must bring their own supplies! Please see suggested materials list below.

Watercolor painting offers a unique opportunity to slow down, notice the details of the landscape, and develop a deeper appreciation for the plants and wildlife that make this place special.

Andrea Patton has been painting professionally for over 40 years, and teaching watercolor for the past 12 years throughout the Texas Hill Country, including at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.  Learn more at APattonFineArt.

Materials List (students must purchase and bring to class):

• 2-3 pieces watercolor paper, minimum size 5 x 7" or larger. 140 lb cold press preferred (recommend watercolor block)
• Watercolor brushes - Recommend the Transon 11 piece set round paint brush set - Amazon $8.99
• OR 3 small round brushes (sizes 1, 2 and 3), 2 medium round brushes (sizes 6 and 8), and 1 medium round mop style brush (size 18 or 20).
• Watercolor tubes of red, blue, yellow, green and black (recommend Winsor & Newton Cotman or Daniel Smith)
• Watercolor pallet to mix paints - Recommend Mijello Airtight Watercolor Fusion 18-well palette on Amazon
• Small ULTRA fine black sharpie marker
• Art tape and foam core (or cardboard) board to tape watercolor paper (if you do not bring block paper)
• Pencil for sketching
• Eraser - Kneaded is preferable.
• Sketch pad
• Bring your lunch!  We will take a 30-min lunch break during the class.  There is a refrigerator available to store your food.

This program is for ages 16+.  Anyone under the age of 18 must be joined by a registered adult.
