Guided Tour: Geology at Headwaters

Step into the story beneath your feet! Join us for a fascinating guided tour exploring how the rocks of the Texas Hill Country have shaped the landscape, the springs, and the water we depend on today. We'll discover why this area sits at the meeting point of two distinct Texas ecoregions, uncover the secrets of ancient limestone formed beneath a prehistoric sea, and learn how the Balcones Escarpment and its faults created the conditions for some of Texas' greatest springs. Whether you're a rock enthusiast or simply curious about the natural world, this tour will leave you seeing the Hill Country through a whole new lens.

Instructor Mike Poffenberger worked for 35 years as a geologist in the oil and gas industry with ExxonMobil before retiring to New Braunfels in 2021.  He is a Texas Master Naturalist and on the board of the Gorge Preservation Society at Canyon Lake Gorge.  He gives geology tours at the Gorge and also volunteers at Headwaters at the Comal, Bracken Bat Cave, and the Guadalupe River Nature trail.  HE loves talking to people about Hill Country geology!

The tour begins at 9 AM and lasts one hour. Afterward, you are welcome to explore on your own.

Headwaters is located at 333 E Klingemann St, near downtown New Braunfels.  Unfortunately, trails are not ADA accessible.
