Description
TRC x Heal
We are delighted to invite you to Heal Somerset for a morning visit. You will first go on a personal tour around our rewilding site with Heal co-founder Jan Stannard and then take part in a citizen science activity, involving monitoring and surveying earthworms to help us with our evidence baseline. Your ticket includes light refreshments and lunch.
Before you arrive, download the following apps to assist you during your surveying: what3words, Merlin (bird calls), Picture Insect.
TIMINGS
9.15am - Arrival. Please arrive promptly to put away your bikes and take off your cleats!
9.30am - Tour of our Heal Somerset rewilding site with Jan Stannard
10.30am - Refreshments at the farmhouse and an intro to worm surveys
11.00am - Worm surveys out on site
12.30pm - Lunch (soup and a roll + fruit, suitable for vegans).
Clothing & Kit
As you'll be arriving in cycle shoes, please pack a second set of footwear suitable for rough, uneven ground and potentially getting muddy. If the weather has been very wet in recent days and you are able to carry wellingtons, that would be ideal, or shoes you don't mind getting wet and muddy. Bring spare socks too.
If the forecast is wet, bring a waterproof jacket with a hood. To reduce the chance of ticks finding their way inside clothing, we recommend long sleeves and long trousers tucked into socks. Please bring a water bottle, preferably a reusable one, which you can top up on site. If possible, we recommend you bring your belongings in a small rucksack in your panniers, so that you can carry your layers / kit with you as you explore the site.
[We give this level of detail to encourage people who may be unfamiliar with being out in nature. We also hope this is a useful reminder to those already aware.]
Optional additional equipment
If you have access to the below items, we recommend bringing them along:
- Waterproof trousers for tall grass (if weather is particularly wet)
- Binoculars
- Gardening gloves (though we will provide latex/nitrile gloves for the citizen science activity)
Lunch & Refreshments
Heal Somerset will provide lunch as well as hot and cold drinks.
Location
Navigate to: Heal Somerset, Lower West Barn Farm, Bindon Lane, Witham Friary, BA11 5HH. If you navigate to the postcode, it will take you to the ‘postcode house’, this is not us – please use directions below.
Directions
If you come through Witham Friary or have come from the A303 heading towards Witham Friary, and the ‘postcode house’ is on the right, keep going another few hundred metres and turn into the Visitor Parking on the right (with a large white 'Welcome' banner on the gate). If you get to the farmyard on the right (before going over the railway bridge) you have gone too far.
If you come from the Upton Noble direction, cycle a couple of miles around bends and then just after you’ve gone over the railway bridge, go past the farmyard on the left and keep going another couple of hundred metres and turn into the Visitor Parking on the left (with a large white 'Welcome' banner on the gate). If you find you have the ‘postcode house’ on the left, you’ve gone too far and need to turn around.
If you have problems finding us, call 01749 684757.
You will be met in the Visitor Parking area by Jan Stannard. She will then show you a safe location to leave your bicycle.
