Description

This online training is made up of two 2¼ hour sessions with a 15-minute break. This Training will take place on Wednesday 9 November from 13.30 - 15.45 and Wednesday 16 November 13.30 - 15.45. Please read a description below for more information:

Managing Risk

This course is a requirement for Trauma Enhanced Practice level certification. This course is aimed at workers with direct and frequent contact with people who have mild to severe mental health problems or who may be known to be survivors of any kind of trauma.

It is assumed that participants will have knowledge at an intermediate level about trauma through experience or previous training. This course will not cover the causes of trauma.

Aim

To be able to recognise and understand the risks that individuals who are survivors of trauma may present with. Underline the workers responsibilities around reporting risk.

This training will support participants to:

Know and understand (realise)

  • the importance of holding the safety needs of the person and their dependents in mind at all times, including the need for risk-assessment
  • recognise the place of safety in the three phased model of recovery
  • recognise and understand the risk of traumatised individual’s experiencing further trauma / revictimization
  • understand that the difficulties which raise safety concerns, may have developed as a means of coping with the impact of trauma.

Recognise signs of trauma

  • recognise and understand the link between past trauma and current risk behaviours
  • the importance of recognising signs and symptoms which are indicative of ongoing trauma and abuse.

Respond to the trauma/ Resist making it worse

  • reflect on the role of the trauma informed principles in risk management, including how to work collaboratively when responding to immediate needs for safety
  • know their responsibility to record both disclosure and risks and take appropriate action
  • explore the needs of the worker doing risk management and how this might impact on them.

Trainer

Emily Steedman has over 13 years’ experience of working with Health in Mind. Currently she is a Project Worker with the Trauma Support Services. Emily has a keen interest and passion for using creative tools to foster collective advocacy and raise awareness of the difficulties and barriers faced by people affected by trauma. She has an MSc in Community Education and many years of experience facilitating workshops.
