Moth Evening and Nature Morning - Identify Moths, Watch Migrating Birds and go on an Autumn Bird Walk

Friday Night Moth Evening

We will gather from 6.30PM to set up the moth traps, have a cup of tea and hear a bit about the moths that we might expect to catch.  We will then spend some time next to the traps catching and identifying moths as they arrive under the expert guidance of Steve Thorpe.

Saturday Morning Moth Identification, Visible Migration and Bird Walk

We will gather for 8am to open up the Moth traps deployed the night before.  Under the expert guidance of Steve Thorpe we will identify our finds and record them as part of the ongoing survey work at the farm.

After examining the contents of the Moth trap we will take a short stroll to join a visible migration drop in session where Antony will talk about the wonders of autumn bird migration and the addictive pastime of 'vis-migging', as well as pointing out the species that are on the move above and through the farm at this time of year. Spare binoculars and a scope will be available for you to join in but please bring your own if you have them.

After a break for a warming cup of tea or coffee Antony will be leading an autumn bird walk from 10 until 12am around the farm where we hopefully get a better look at some of our resident and wintering species. Our spring and summer stars, such as Redstart, Spotted Flycatcher and Tree Pipit, may have departed but a wealth of new characters have arrived with Redwing, Fieldfare, Siskin and Redpoll enjoying the bountiful fields and hedgerows.

You are welcome to move between moth identification,  vis-migging and warm drinks in the barn as you wish before we come together for out walk.

What to Bring

Please dress for the great outdoors and wear sturdy and waterproof footwear.  We will be walking on undulating and sometimes uneven ground.  If coming for Friday Night please bring a torch with you.
