The life of the French composer Charles Gounod (1818-1893) coincided with an era of mechanical innovation that transformed European culture. Through his gloriously lyrical, expressive music we’re going to be telling the story of how, with the influence of three brand new pieces of technology ~ the railway, the piano and the offset litho printing press ~ Gounod gained world fame as a writer of operas instead of the modest church composer he might have been.
