Description
FOLLIA present a programme of music for soprano, 2 violins and bass continuo .
Opening with Handel’s strident ‘From mighty kings’ from Judas Maccabeus, the centrepiece of the hour long recital is Leonardo Leo’s stunning and forward-looking Salve Regina in F. A native of Naples, Leo is noted for his mastery over modern harmonic counterpoint.
Mozart made 3 lengthy tours of Italy in order to soak up the Italian styles and promote his own works. The recital closes with Mozart’s ‘Laudate Dominum’ from the Vesperae de Dominica, K. 321, composed in 1779. Both Mozart and JC Bach received tuition from Martini in Bologna.
JC Bach, the senior figure, known as the ‘London Bach’, met young Mozart on his London tour in 1764 and taught the eight-year old prodigy for five months. JC Bach is noted to have had a profound influence on Mozart’s compositional style. The programme includes JC Bach’s harpsichord Concerto in D and a trio sonata.
