CLASS OUTLINE:
Day 1 - Learn the names of the tiles and how to read the official American Mahjong Card. Put those two things together to practice making winning hands. Learn how to set up the game, deal tiles, and learn the order of game play.
Day 2 - Play practice games with what we've learned so far. Discuss choosing a hand, which many new players consider the most difficult part. Throw in some strategy concepts to finish things off.
Day 3 - Play games for fun! Learn how to play with different numbers of players and how to keep score. Answer all of those "what if" questions and address uncommon rules and scenarios.
YOUR INSTRUCTOR:
Brandon Oberkampf is a local resident and has been playing Mahjong regularly for a few years. Over the years, he has discovered that more people want to learn to play the game but realized there was a lack of qualified classes in the area. Thus, a year ago, Brandon put a curriculum together and started teaching.
The game requires a combination of concentration, skill, and luck. So with the luck aspect of it alone, even new players have a good chance of winning. For the skill aspect of it, Mahjong does need to be learned in more than a day. So Brandon teaches that needed skill base so people can confidently join any group to play.
Mahjong is not only an addictively fun game, but it's a great way to socialize with friends and make new acquaintances.
