Tchaikovsky Serenade for String Orchestra Op.48
Tavener The Protecting Veil
Harriet Wiltshire cello
John Tavener described the solo cello in The Protecting Veil as “capturing some of the almost cosmic power of the Mother of God. The cello represents The Mother of God and never stops singing throughout. One can think of the strings as a gigantic extension of her unending song”. Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings is full of joy and passion, captivating the listener as it weaves together a waltz, an expansive elegy, and Russian folksong.
Pre-concert talk with Steve Clarke begins at 6.45pm. Doors open at 6.15pm for the talk and at 7.15pm for the concert only.
