Kalaʻe Camarillo at the Velvet Monkey
Two Shows • An Evening of Hawaiian Music & Story
Spend an intimate evening with Kalaʻe Camarillo, one of Hawai‘i’s respected voices in contemporary Hawaiian music. Known for his smooth vocals, thoughtful songwriting, and strong connection to island roots, Kalaʻe brings a style that blends tradition with a fresh, modern feel.A Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-winning artist, including Song of the Year honors for “Sands of Old Lahaina,” Kalaʻe comes from a multi-generational musical ʻohana—from his grandfather, who helped bring ʻukulele into Hawai‘i’s schools, to his father, a dedicated music teacher, and his aunty, Lehua Kalima of Nā Leo Pilimehana. This deep-rooted legacy shapes his approach to music today, reflected in performances that feel both personal and grounded in place.
In celebration of May Day, this special evening carries the spirit of mele, culture, and connection—expressed through heartfelt originals, beloved local favorites, and the stories that bring them to life.
