Makana pays homage to the late greats of Kī Hōʻalu (Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar) - Gabby “Pops” Pahinui, Sonny Chillingworth, Raymond Kāne, Fred Punahoa, and more. Sharing their repertoire in their signature styles, along with personal and passed-down stories surrounding their music and legend.

Armed with replica guitars - the same make, year, model, and color of the “Chet Atkins” Gretsch guitar that Sonny played in the early days of his career, and the famous D12-28 Martin 12-string with which Pops built his Gabby Band sound, Makana invites the audience back to a time when Slack Key Guitar first became the soundscape of the Hawaiian cultural renaissance.
