HONOLULU JAZZ QUARTET
Celebrating 25 Years of Extraordinary Jazz
Four Acclaimed Musicians. One Remarkable Musical Journey.
An Anniversary Celebration at Kapono's at The Lounge
For 25 years, the Honolulu Jazz Quartet (HJQ) has been one of Hawaiʻi's most respected and beloved jazz ensembles. Four extraordinary musicians whose individual talents, shared musical vision, and enduring friendship have created something truly special.
Founded by acclaimed bassist John Kolivas, the quartet brings together Tim Tsukiyama on saxophone, Dan Del Negro on piano, and Stacey Tangonan on drums. Together, they've developed a signature sound marked by exceptional musicianship, creative improvisation, and the unmistakable chemistry that comes from making music together for a quarter of a century.
Winners of a 2023 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award, HJQ has released four critically acclaimed recordings and performed everywhere from Hawaiʻi's premier jazz venues to stages in California and Seattle, including collaborations with the Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra.
Individually, their musical journeys are equally impressive:
John Kolivas | Bass - A Hawaiʻi-born bassist, composer, and bandleader whose career includes eight years in New York City's jazz scene and performances with George Benson, Larry Coryell, Don Grusin, Keola Beamer, John Cruz, and Henry Kapono.
Tim Tsukiyama | Saxophone - A Berklee College of Music alumnus and former Royal Hawaiian Band member who has performed with legends including Ray Charles, Dee Dee Bridgewater, John Pizzarelli, and The Temptations.
Dan Del Negro | Piano - A Chicago-born jazz pianist whose impressive credits include performances with Herbie Mann, Eric Marienthal, Nestor Torres, and Larry Coryell.
Stacey Tangonan | Drums - A highly respected Hawaiʻi drummer whose musical collaborations include Jimmy Borges, Betty Loo Taylor, Kalapana, and Nā Leo Pilimehana.
Now, these four longtime musical partners come together at Kapono's at The Lounge to celebrate an incredible 25 years of making music together.
Expect an evening of sophisticated jazz, inspired improvisation, familiar favorites, original compositions, and the effortless musical conversation that only comes from decades of playing together.
Twenty-five years. Four remarkable musicians. One unforgettable celebration of jazz.
