Description
CARL DREYER’S CLASSIC 1928 SILENT FILM WITH LIVE FILM SCORE BY CELLIST LORI GOLDSTON
Spiritual rapture and institutional hypocrisy come to life vividly in one of the most transcendent masterpieces of the silent era. Cellist Lori Goldston (famously of Nirvana's MTV Unplugged) performs an original live score drawing from medieval secular and liturgical music and free improvisation.

Remarks by Lori Goldston:
I fell in love with early silent movies the day I watched the original Nosferatu on a tiny kitchen television one afternoon after high school. It was like seeing something that was beamed from another dimension and I was hooked.
In the 1990s, on unemployment after touring with Nirvana, I offered my services as house accompanist at a scrappy Seattle storefront theater, the Pike Street Cinema, run by projectionist, curator, collector and scholar Dennis Nyback.
Since then I have composed for and performed with dozens of early silent films solo, with small ensembles and with my band the Black Cat Orchestra. My work has been commissioned and/or presented by the Cineteca Nacional de Mèxico, the Frye Art Museum, the Fine Arts Cinema, and throughout the US and Europe.
I love the process of translating visual motion into sound, and my compositions and long-form solo improvisation are deeply influenced by cinematic visual storytelling.
