In Praise of Earth – Northumbrian Winds

Our GAIA closing concert is an amazing bespoke programme from Northumbrian Winds

In Praise of Earth – Northumbrian Winds

After the success of their performance here last year, Northumbrian Winds is delighted to return to this stunning setting—this time under the gaze of Gaia, the awe-inspiring installation by Luke Jerram. The detailed recreation of Earth as seen from space invites us to reflect on the beauty, complexity, and fragility of our planet—an ideal backdrop for this musical celebration.

In honour of Gaia, the first half of the programme is themed around the Earth and the elements that shape it. Included is the iconic and dramatic “Also Sprach Zarathustra”, and the more lyrical “What a Wonderful World”, featuring a soulful alto saxophone solo. Pieces such as “Sailing With Whales” and “Aurora Borealis” will transport us through landscapes of emotion and imagination. Vocal highlights like “River Deep, Mountain High” and the evocative “Round Midnight” bring a human voice to our connection with the natural world.

The second half of the evening will invite you on a musical journey around the globe. Beginning in the UK with the regal “Crown Imperial”, then travelling to southern Italy, before pausing in Ukraine for “Kyiv”, a piece full of strength and spirit. Our path continues through several more destinations before hitting the dazzling lights of New York, and a final celebratory flourish in Ireland with “Riverdance”.

Music and the presence of Gaia will create a unique and immersive experience—one that not only entertains but encourages reflection on our place in the world. We are proud to share this concert with you, celebrating the power of music to connect people, cultures, and the planet we all share.
