Cinema Group - Plein Soleil (1960, René Clément)

Our next presentation looks at the Art of Cinema, more specifically Adaptation. The film is Plein Soleil (Purple Noon), made in 1960 by René Clément. It was the first screen adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's The Talented Mr Ripley subsequently remade in 1999 by Anthony Mingella with Matt Damon, and in 2024 by Steven Zaillian with Andrew Scott. This version stars Alain Delon, Maurice Ronet and Marie Laforêt in René Clément’s stylish and suspenseful adaptation. Delon, in his breakthrough role, plays Tom Ripley, sent to Italy to persuade his wealthy friend Philippe to return home, but when Philippe repeatedly humiliates him, Tom decides to take over his friend’s identity — with increasingly deadly consequences.

Please arrive by 10:05 am so that we can all take our seats for a prompt start at 10.15 with an introduction by Searle Kochberg. The film will automatically begin at 10.45. After the film, at about 12:45, Searle will lead a discussion in the cinema for up to 20 minutes, after which we'll adjourn to the café, where those who wish may continue the discussion.
