Self-Portrait: More Than a Face

What does a portrait say about you beyond what you look like? In this hands-on painting experience, students will explore self-portraiture as a way to express personality, identity, mood, and personal style. Students will learn the fundamentals of portrait painting, including proportion, facial features, color mixing, value, light, and shadow while experimenting with techniques that allow their individual artistic voices to come through.

Students can move beyond a traditional, realistic portrait by making intentional choices about color, composition, background, expression, and symbolism. Whether bold and graphic, subtle and realistic, or completely unexpected, each painting becomes an opportunity to show a different side of themselves. Come ready to experiment, take creative risks, and turn a picture of yourself into a work of art that actually says something.

This is a 6-week course that will help students study in multiple ways to create a self-portrait painting.
