Waking from the dream

A ‘Buddha’ is one who has realised ‘bodhi’. The root of both these words, budh, is ‘to wake’, to know’, ‘to understand’. We know directly what this analogy is getting at - we wake up, often straight out of a dream, every single day!

We’re asleep, deeply enmeshed in a dream - maybe a nightmare - and suddenly we’re awake. At that moment, the world that seemed so real a moment ago is seen to be illusory, not ‘real’. There is not the slightest doubt - we know.

But the analogy of ‘waking up’ is also a challenge: the Buddha didn’t just wake up from an ordinary dream, but from the dream of belief in and holding on to this very ‘reality’. This is the dream, the illusion, and it’s one that involves a lot of unnecessary suffering.

The Buddha saw through all layers of illusion in the course of a single night, but the vast majority of people see through and wake up from illusion layer by layer.

On this weekend retreat we’ll be exploring perhaps the most persistent layer of illusion: that ‘I am separate’. How do we create a sense of ‘me’ as a separate entity, and ‘other’ as an objective world ‘out there’? And, most importantly, how can we genuinely wake up from the narrow confines of identification with the dream into a space of openness, pervaded by clear-seeing and unconditional love?

What do I pay to attend?

This practice weekend runs on the basis of dana (generosity), like all our events. When those who are able donate generously, it enables those with less financial resources to freely attend. There is a suggested amount of £80-120 for attending the whole weekend but please give whatever you can afford (whether more or less) to help us continue to run events for the benefit of our community.

Your donation will help cover our centre costs and help support Tejananda's work .

Regardless of donation amount you are welcome to attend this event (eg if you're unable to donate anything).

You can book and choose an amount to donate online when you "Select tickets".
