Artist-in-residence Lucy Beale

Lucy studied Fine Art at Cumbria College of Art and Design, graduating in 1998.  During this time she developed a love for oil painting, finding much inspiration in the depth and richness of the colours and the softness of the paint.  Originally from Arundel, Lucy has lived in Horsham with her family for the last twenty years where she juggles busy family life alongside an artistic practice.

She works with oils on canvas, taking inspiration from the time spent in the landscapes of Sussex with her family. The South Downs provide endless amounts of inspiration from which to work. The paintings often evolve from the original source of inspiration to become more abstract as she works with the paint and canvas to explore colour and form however there are always hints of landscape within the work.

Having returned to painting after a long break whilst raising a family, Lucy now exhibits widely throughout Sussex and further afield within the UK.

“ …my inspiration comes very much from my surroundings. I’m very lucky to live in West Sussex, surrounded by beautiful countryside and not too far from the coast. I work intuitively, I have no defined end goal for a piece of work - I like to allow my inspiration, along with the paint and the canvas take a piece of work in its own direction.“
