What is a Burns Supper?

For well over 200 years Scots have been celebrating the birth, life & works of their national bard (poet) Robert Burns with an evening full of music, poetry, fine dining, dancing and, of course, whisky. It is one of the main highlights of the Scottish social calendar, with Burns Suppers taking place across every continent in the weeks before and after the 25th January.

In Scotland, if Hogmanay (New Year's Eve) is the most celebrated event of the year, then Burns Night is a very close second, and both often given more importance than St. Andrew‘s day which occurs on the 30th November.

The Burns Night program has, more or less, not changed since Burns' death in 1796. An evening full of Scottish culture - the ceremony starts with a procession led by bagpipes, contains excerpts from Burns' poems and songs, gallant toasts to ladies and gentlemen, the famous song Auld Lang Syne and the main event, a gala dinner consisting of typical Scottish dishes and a recital of the Address to the Haggis.

Robert Burns was a poet who was also a freemason, he was best known to those who wrote in Scots - a strong dialect based on English, as opposed to the original Scottish Gaelic spoken by people from the Highlands. Many of his works are also written in English and in the Scottish dialect, which is understandable to a wider audience. He also wrote in standard English, and these poems also contain his political or civic commentary, which is often very indiscriminate. He is considered a pioneer of Romanticism and a cultural figure both in Scotland and among Scottish emigrants around the world. The celebration of his life and work became even a national cult in the 19th and 20th centuries, and its influence on Scottish literature persists.

In addition to his own work, Burns also collected folk songs and poems throughout Scotland and often edited them as well. His poem (and song) Auld Lang Syne is often sung on Hogmanay (New Year's Eve), while the song Scots Wha Hae has long served as an unofficial anthem. Burns' other poems and songs are still known around the world, such as A Red, Red Rose, A Man's A Man for A' That, To a Louse, To a Mouse, The Battle of Sherramuir, Tam O'Shanter and Ae Fond Kiss. His work Committee of Songs and Ballads was even translated into Czech by Josef V. Sládek.

Then to the dancing - if you have never been to a Scottish ceilidh, or know how to dance reels, jigs or strathspeys? Fear not! Our Callers (instructors) will turn you into experts! Just bring your smile and a partner to the dance floor.

Hiram Lodge No:12 is Prague's only English speaking masonic lodge holding charter under the Grand lodge of the Czech Republic, and we proudly bring this popular evening to you with an open invitation to friends and partners of our masonic and scouting community.

All proceeds from this event will be split between Otevřené srdce a home in Holesovice set up to provide shelter and support to predominantly mothers who have fallen on hard times and the 1st Prague scouts group which is an English speaking scout group in Prague.

Ticket prices are 2,300Kc per person.

Your ticket price includes all the entertainment outlined in the above programme, a delightful 3-course meal, and unlimited beverages (beer, wine, cola, 7UP, tea, and coffee) for a generous 6-hour duration. How to purchase:

1. Click buy tickets to open the seating chart, decide whether you want to purchase single tickets or the whole table. Whole table is blue,
   single seats are white tables with orange clickable seats.
2. If you have been given a code, click on "Do you have an access code?" and enter your code, it is case sensitive. The grid will open up and you will be able to book the seats/tables you have been allocated.
3. Click on the table or seat/seats you want 
4. Click confirm
5. Click next and continue to payment with your card. Payment is securely made through paypal with all of its protections. 
6. Your ticket will be emailed to you. 
7. If you bought a whole table inform those in your table of the table number the booking will be in the name of the purchaser

Co je to Burns Supper?

Již více než 200 let Skotové oslavují narození, život a dílo svého národního barda (básníka) Roberta Burnse večerem plným hudby, poezie, dobrého jídla, tance a samozřejmě whisky. Je to jeden z hlavních vrcholů skotského společenského kalendáře, přičemž Burns Suppers se konají na všech kontinentech v týdnech okolo 25. ledna.

Pokud je ve Skotsku Hogmanay (Nový rok) nejoslavovanější událostí roku, pak Burns Night je velmi těsně na druhém místě a oběma je často přikládán větší význam než Dni svatého Ondřeje, který připadá na 30. listopadu.

Program Burns Night se od Burnsovy smrti v roce 1796 víceméně nezměnil. Jde o večer plný skotské kultury - ceremonie začíná průvodem v čele s dudami, obsahuje úryvky z Burnsových básní a písní, galantní přípitky dámám a pánům, slavnou píseň Auld Lang Syne a hlavní událost, slavnostní večeři skládající se z typických skotských jídel a recitálu Óda na haggis.

Robert Burns byl básník, který byl také svobodným zednářem, nejvíce ho znali ti, kteří psali ve skotském dialektu angličtiny, na rozdíl od původní skotské gaelštiny, kterou mluvili lidé ze skotské vysočiny. Mnoho z jeho děl je také napsáno v angličtině a ve skotském dialektu, který je srozumitelný širšímu publiku. Psal i spisovnou angličtinou a tyto básně obsahují i ​​jeho politický či občanský komentář, který je často velmi nevybíravý. Je považován za průkopníka romantismu a kulturní osobnost jak ve Skotsku, tak mezi skotskými emigranty po celém světě. Oslava jeho života a díla se stala v 19. a 20. století dokonce národním kultem a její vliv na skotskou literaturu přetrvává.

Kromě své vlastní tvorby sbíral Burns také lidové písně a básně po celém Skotsku a často je upravoval. Jeho báseň (a píseň) Auld Lang Syne se často zpívá na Hogmanay (Nový rok), zatímco píseň Scots Wha Hae dlouho sloužila jako neoficiální skotská hymna. Další Burnsovy básně a písně jsou dodnes známé po celém světě, například A Red, Red Rose, A Man's A Man for A' That, To a Louse, To a Mouse, The Battle of Sherramuir, Tam O'Shanter a Ae Fond Kiss. Jeho dílo Výbor písní a balad dokonce přeložil do češtiny Josef V. Sládek.

Veškerý výtěžek z této akce poputuje azylovému domu pro matky s dětmi Otevřené srdce v Holešovicích zřízenému za účelem poskytování přístřeší a podpory matkám, které prošly těžkými časy a 1st Prague Scouts, což je anglicky mluvící skautský oddíl v Praze.
