A private visit to the Old School House, Langford, a quiet West Oxford village near the upper reaches of the River Thames. Hardy Amies purchased The Old School in 1972 and converted it into a comfortable Gentleman’s Country House in miniature, furnished with exquisite taste, featuring 17th-century furniture, sculpture, ceramics, paintings, prints and textiles, as well as examples of his own needlepoint. He also designed a highly structured garden in the school playground, which had a considerable influence on garden design in the later 1970s and 1980s.

The interior decoration, like that of his London residences and his couture house 14 Savile Row, was overseen by his old friend John Fowler, while two other old friends, Alvilde Lees-Milne and Rosemary Verey, advised on the planting in the garden. 

The Old School has been the home of David Freeman for the last 21 years. David was Sir Hardy’s heir, and a former country house curator (Tredegar Park and Buscot Park). He has greatly enhanced the house and garden, adding colour to the interiors, his own works of art, both contemporary as well as antique, and sculpture in the garden, together with a wider range of plants.
