Description
Enjoy exclusive owner-guided tours of two contrasting and unique country houses in the north Cotswolds.
Explore Talton House, a beautiful 18th century Queen Anne manor house brimming with history. There have been dwellings here since before the Middle Ages. At the time of the Domesday book, Talton belonged to the church; excavated skeletons and crosses suggest some sort of sacred place. There are traces of a medieval building in the larder and a Tudor farmhouse in the attic. The main body of the House was built in 1714, the same year the false acacia tree was planted on the lawn. This tree is on the register of ancient trees. The Hall and first floor of the Wing is Victorian and it was at this time that the park landscaping was carried out with many of the lime and chestnuts planted, and the water in front of the House made ornamental.
After lunch at the historic King’s Arms, dating from 1735, discover Tower Close, Snowshill, an early 18th century house originally comprised of three cottages and enlarged in 1916 for the father of Gordon Russell, the furniture designer. The house has striking views of the Malverns and a three-acre garden with terraces of garden rooms that include herbaceous borders, espaliered fruit trees, a water garden and a sunken vegetable garden. The Grade II-listed house has Cotswold stone slate roofs, mullioned windows with leaded lights, and three hipped dormers, each with wooden casements and stone-slated cheeks. Among the many historic features are the parapet gables with an ashlar ridge and a tower at the rear of the house from which the property gets its name.
Tickets £86 including a two-course lunch at the King’s Arms Inn, Mickleton. Lunch options to be made available to attendees in October 2024.
