Description
Border stronghold of the Grahams, Netherby Hall, a Grade II* listed mansion, has a rich and interesting past.
Situated in the flat lands of Cumbria, approached through the sweeping drive above the River Esk, the house reveals itself.
The site has an archaeological record dating back to the Bronze Age and the house sits astride what was once a major Roman military outpost. A 16th-century pele tower is contained within the later 17th-, 18th- and 19th-century additions.
Home of the Grahams for 400 years, the house has now been beautifully restored by the present owners Gerald and Margo Smith (highly commended in the Historic Houses 2021 Restoration Awards). The interiors feature a magnificent staircase, beautiful plasterwork and 17th-century panelling. Luxury holiday accommodation is available on the 36-acre estate.
The visit includes coffee on arrival in the Orangery; a tour of the house, stables (with cobbled stable yard), gardens and grounds; followed by a buffet lunch – quiches, cold meats, selection of cheeses and salads, cakes, tea and coffee.
Tickets £52 including coffee on arrival and a two-course buffet lunch
Restrictions: Photography allowed in public areas and grounds only
Netherby Hall has a gated entrance, operation by push button, and sweeping drive to the house. Parking on drive in front of the house, entrance to far side.
