Description
Ever wondered about the history of the Hospitallers, the Crusaders and the Knights of the Order of St John? Join Historic Houses for this fascinating tour of St John’s Gate, Clerkenwell.
Join us for a visit to Clerkenwell Priory of the Order of St John to learn more about the unique and fascinating story of an ancient religious military order, from its origins caring for sick pilgrims in eleventh-century Jerusalem, through to its modern-day role with St John Ambulance, the international first aid charity.
We will enjoy a whistle-stop tour of its 900-year history, learning about some of its characters who lived, worked and entertained in the buildings, and visiting the Norman crypt, the priory church and the historic rooms within the gate. Following the award of a £3.6 million Heritage lottery grant, the building has undergone extensive renovations and is well worth a visit. Part of the tour takes place outside so dress for the weather!
After the tour we will pop into St Bartholomew the Great in Smithfield for a look around (subject to permission). It is a jewel of a Norman church dating from 1123 and yet another building that is associated with caring for the sick.
Please note: there is no coffee available at the museum but there are two places to buy coffee nearby, called Knockbox Coffee, and Roni’s Café. They are next to each other and a minute’s walk away from the museum.
Tickets £19 (no refreshments included)
