Description
Enjoy exclusive owner-guided tours of two contrasting and beautifully positioned houses in the heart of this tranquil and unspoilt corner of Devon.
Sidbury Manor
Explore Sidbury Manor, lived in continuously by the Cave family for which the house was built in the 1870s by Stephen Cave, the MP for New Shoreham. The Grade II house, designed by David Brandon, is a beautiful red brick mansion, cornered with Hamstone quoins, with a slate roof and Jacobean chimneys, and two towers, one square and the other octagonal with gargoyles in the shape of dogs and griffins, which stand out as an important historical landmark. The entrance has a stone gable topped with a lion and finial. There is a two bay arcade with diamond block piers and four arches, which is then repeated in the conservatory which has a stone faced front. The house has a second square tower with a French roof and weathervane.
Sand
Later discover Grade II* Sand , one of East Devon’s hidden gems; a beautiful stone Elizabethan manor house set in a tranquil valley garden, which had, until recently, been owned by the same family since 1560. The house takes its name from William de Sande, who bought the property from the Dean and Chapter of Exeter Cathedral in the middle of the 13th century. Records show that there was a small stone house on the site in 1408 when it was sold to Roger Tremayle who replaced the original house. This was then rebuilt by Henry Huyshe in 1560 and his eldest son inherited the house in 1590 having married Anne Wentworth, a descendant of Edward I. They added wings and created the present two-storey entrance porch. The house was carefully extended and restored in the 20th century by Roland Huyshe with help from the architect, E.H. Harbottle. This work is pure Tudor and virtually indistinguishable. The outstanding gardens shelter a late 15th century hall and thatched summerhouse. The owners will regale us with ghostly tales and show legal documents relating to Sand dating from the 13th century.
Tickets £75 including a two-course carvery pub lunch with tea and coffee at the Hare and Hounds Inn, Sidbury. Lunch options to be made available to attendees in June 2025.
