Winterborne Valley Manor Houses
EXCLUSIVE HISTORIC HOUSES MEMBERS TOUR
Enjoy exclusive owner guided tours of two of south Dorset’s least known Grade II* country houses
Discover Muston Manor, a tucked-away Grade II* late 17th century house with 18th century additions. The house has Flemish bond brickwork, a half-hipped thatched roof and a two storey porch, probably built in imitation of nearby Anderson Manor. Pevsner described the house as “a thatched cottage of unusual pretension”. It contains some wonderful internal features for a relatively small house. Many rooms have fielded panelling and open fireplaces. The sitting room has a moulded cornice and on the first floor two rooms have coved and segmental plastered ceilings.

Later explore Herringston House, a fascinating manor house which derives from the granting of a licence to Walterus Heryng de Winterborne for the crenellation of his manor in 1336. The main structure of the present house is probably of this date although much altered. The oldest visible features are from the 16th century. In 1513 the manor was acquired by John Williams who succeeded to the estate and it was his grandson who “beautified the house” in 1569 by remodelling or partly rebuilding it. Our owner led tour will take us through the history of the house and its previous owners.
