Visit Castletown House, a striking, well-proportioned mansion, set within 4,000 acres. Enjoy a family-led tour and talk through the dynamics of this splendid property and rural estate.

Built in the Grecian style and completed in 1811, the house stands magnificently within the grounds of the Castletown Estate. The house has been occupied by family members, sailors, soldiers and lawyers, and was listed as a Grade II building in 1957.

Dating from the early 1800s, designed and built by distinguished architect Peter Nicholson for Robert Mounsey, the house is set in a commanding position over the tidal sweep of Rockcliffe marshes with stunning views across parkland and onto the village of Rockcliffe. It is listed in Pevsner’s Buildings of Cumbria. After coffee, the owner will give a tour of the house and estate, followed by lunch.

The Mounsey-Heyshams will also give a talk about the estate, including the land and farming, working with the wild expanse of estuary, mudflats and marsh, and the internationally important wildlife thriving alongside native-breed beef and Wagyu crossbreeds, as well as their other successful business diversifications.

Tickets £65 including:

  • Coffee and biscuits on arrival
  • A two-course lunch of lasagne, green salad, tomato salad, followed by apple crumble and cream. Soft drinks and coffee to follow.
  • Tea and cake before leaving

Special diets can be catered for - please note any dietary requirements on the booking form.
