Discover the Hidden Gems of the High Weald: A Scenic Hike Through Nature Reserves and Historic Estates
Join us on an unforgettable 11-mile hike through two breathtaking nature reserves and historic estates in the heart of the High Weald, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Experience a captivating blend of nature spotting, history, and scenic landscapes as we explore ancient woodlands, dramatic sandstone rock formations, and lush heathland.
A Perfect Blend of History and Nature
Our adventure begins with a walk through a charming village and the historic parkland of the Abergavenny Estate, home to England's oldest enclosed Deer Park. This remarkable site, also a place of scientific interest, once hosted royal and political figures, including the Prince of Wales and Benjamin Disraeli, who attended exclusive shooting parties here. The estate’s rich history sets the stage for a day filled with discovery.
As we make our way through the countryside, you’ll receive a nature spotting sheet, allowing you to identify a variety of local plants and animals. Keep your eyes peeled and senses alert—who knows what hidden treasures we'll uncover along the way?
On days when the Spa Valley Railway is operating, you'll also have the chance to hear and see vintage steam and diesel trains chugging past, adding a nostalgic touch to our journey.
Explore High Weald’s Natural Beauty
The morning leg of the hike takes us through the undulating terrain of the High Weald, a quintessentially English landscape of rolling hills and dense woodlands. We begin with a slightly longer route to Mottsmill Stream, offering scenic views and a peaceful, tranquil atmosphere. Then, we’ll make our way toward the village of Groombridge, which grew in prominence with the arrival of the railway, transitioning from a small hamlet to the vibrant community it is today.
Afternoon Exploration: Historic Sites and Stunning Views
In the afternoon, we continue our journey from Old Groombridge’s village green to Groombridge Place, a stunning Jacobean manor house surrounded by a medieval moat. This picturesque estate offers a glimpse into the region’s rich history and architectural beauty.
Next, we’ll pass Harrison's Rocks, a striking sandstone outcrop where climbers often practice their skills, providing a dramatic backdrop to our walk. From there, we’ll head through Broadwater Warren Nature Reserve, once a dense conifer plantation but now being carefully restored to heathland and woodland by the RSPB. The tranquil reserve is a haven for wildlife, and we’ll have plenty of time to take in the sights and sounds of nature.
Finally, our hike concludes with a visit to Eridge Rocks, another impressive sandstone formation. This nature reserve, managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust, offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding area and provides a fitting end to a day immersed in the beauty of the High Weald.
