Riots in leafy West Sussex, surely not? Yet, widespread disorder, including violent street demonstrations, broke out at regular intervals in Sussex, from medieval times until the twentieth century. This illustrated talk will begin with the medieval peasant rebellions, through to the Clubmen of the Civil War era, the Captain Swing Riots of the early nineteenth century, the Skeleton Army riots of the late nineteenth century, and culminating in the anti-fascist protests of the 1930s. Chris will also discuss 'Rough Music' and other expressions of community justice. You may never see the history of Sussex in quiet the same way after attending this talk!
