Sussex has some pretty impressive castles, including one, at Pevensey, that dates backs back to Roman times; most of the others are Norman or medieval. Locally, there is the glorious mixture of ancient and modern at Arundel, or the mere remnant of a castle at Chichester with the earthen mound in Priory Park. This talk will give an historical overview of Sussex castles (who built them and why), and also look at the folklore and legends that have become attached to many of them. We will also look at some lost castles (e.g. Pulborough) and some castles that are not really castles at all (e.g. Amberley).
