There is an increasing acknowledgement that, in order to best support students to thrive at university, we need to think about meeting students where they are in relation to their previous educational experiences. Supporting students to transition to the unique university learning environment is extremely important, but we face numerous challenges – unfamiliarity with school curriculums, different approaches to skills training and assessment, a variety of educational backgrounds, etc. Particularly in a post-Covid environment, understanding the context of our students’ transition to university-level study is vital for effective teaching and support.

We are delighted to be joined for this event by Dr David Brown. David has taught in secondary education for over 40 years, as well as FE and HE institutions, and has extensive experience across these sectors. David will be leading discussions informed by his research into assessment and A-level examinations, considering what this means for teaching at universities, what we might expect students to arrive with in terms of skills and ability to learn – and, by extension, how to best achieve this at university level.
