HM Prison & Probation Service Think Child Campaign (2026) - Through Children’s Eyes: The Unseen Impact on Neurodivergent Children When a Family Member Is Imprisoned
📅 1 July | ⏰ 10:30–11:30 | 💻 MS Teams
Children experience parental or family imprisonment in very different ways; for neurodivergent children, those experiences can be particularly complex and often overlooked. This powerful session brings children’s voices to the centre of safeguarding practice.
We will hear directly from children with lived experience, whose neurodivergent needs have shaped how they experienced having a family member in prison. Through a live interview and facilitated Q&A, they will share what helped, what was challenging, and what professionals could have done differently.
The event will also feature Sarah Beresford OBE, Associate of the Prison Reform Trust (PRT), who will reflect on the importance of listening to children and involving them meaningfully in decisions that affect them. Sarah co‑developed PRT’s Child Impact Assessment resources alongside children with lived experience and is passionate about ensuring children’s voices shape policy and practice.
This event offers an opportunity to:
- hear directly from children about the impact of imprisonment on their lives
- better understand how neurodivergence can shape safeguarding needs and experiences
- reflect on how professionals can listen, adapt and respond more effectively
- strengthen child‑centred and inclusive safeguarding practice
