HM Prison & Probation Service Think Child Campaign (2026) - Birth Companions: Recognising and Responding to Pregnancy and Early Motherhood for Women in the Criminal Justice System
📅 1 July | ⏰ 13:30–14:30 | 💻 MS Teams
The period from conception to a child's second birthday - now widely known as the first 1001 days - is a critical time in laying the foundations for long term health and wellbeing. It is also a vital window of opportunity for safeguarding, support and early intervention. In this event, the national charity Birth Companions will explore why this period is so significant and how practitioners can Think Child when working with families in pre-birth and early motherhood.
Drawing on evidence, policy and lived experience, the session will examine how probation, prisons and partner agencies can better recognise and respond to the needs of pregnant women, mothers, and their infants. We will hear directly from a woman with lived experience of pregnancy and early motherhood while involved in the criminal justice system, offering powerful insight into how systems can support families at this critical time. The event will also consider the overlap between criminal justice and social care, highlight learning from case reviews, and reflect on how system changes can improve practice.
The event will:
- explore the first 1001 days and why this period matters from a safeguarding perspective
- highlight the risks and opportunities during pregnancy and early motherhood
- emphasise the importance of effective multi‑agency working
- share emerging tools and guidance to support confident, informed practice
