Perhaps to the surprise of the international audience, the most awarded director in Hong Kong Film Awards history is not Wong Kar-wai, Johnnie To, or any of the more popular men – it’s Ann Hui. But it’s no surprise to local Hong Kongers or cinephiles. Like Keep Rolling’s title suggests, the legendary new wave icon’s career has endured longer than most of her peers. Directed by her longtime collaborator Man Lim-chung (a legendary production designer of his own), this documentary not only reviews her storied career but also takes a peek into her personal life, finding Hui’s often hilarious character in the midst of all her struggles and successes. Linking her spirit to her hometown’s, the film locates not only her tenacity and resilience, but also that of her city’s people.
