No Brightness in the City

城市裡的光天化日

Runtime: 6:34

Overview

"No Brightness in the City" unfolds amidst the fading democratic symbols in one of Hong Kong's universities. This narrative weaves together themes of democracy, suppression, and remembrance in Hong Kong's academic institutions.

It emerges as a visual diary, capturing moments steeped in contemplative darkness and resonant silence. The 'City' here represents not only the name of the alma mater we hold dear, but also the very essence of the city we cherish and call home.

As Christmas eve approached in 2021, the "forbidden objects" of democracy faded away from three prestigious Hong Kong universities.

The shadow of Big Brother's hand then fell upon the fourth university.

"No Brightness in the City" revolves around the consistent observations of "someone" each time she returns to her alma mater, City University of Hong Kong. This visual diary began on Christmas Day and concluded after three months.

Yet, "someone" made the choice not to inscribe the pivotal moments into the diary.
