The Big Wirral Environmental Debate
Mon 24 Jun 2024 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Wirral Met College, TWELVE QUAYS CAMPUS Morpeth Dock Shore Road Birkenhead, CH41 1AG
Description
Ahead of the general election on the 4th July, residents of the four constituencies covering the Wirral and Ellesmere Port are uniting to show our candidates that our communities want climate and nature to be a political priority.
Do you want to hear your parliamentary candidates answer questions on how they'll prioritise climate and nature if they're elected?
Whether you're interested in flooding, retrofitting, renewable energy, food provision, nature enhancements or other issues related to climate change and the environment, this event is the place for you to ask your candidates about their plans and priorities if they're elected in July.
This event is open to constituents of Wirral West, Wallasey, Birkenhead and Ellesmere Port and Bromborough.
Join us from 7pm in the main hall at Wirral Met College, Twelve Quays Campus for the main debate - we'll invite one representative from each political party to answer questions on behalf of their colleagues across the four constituencies. Residents of each constituency will then be invited to separate into smaller rooms for constituency focused Q&A sessions.
When you sign up for this event, you'll be invited to submit an environmental focused question in advance, and as many as possible will be asked of candidates in the main hall debate. When crafting your question, think about the following:
Try not to be confrontational with your questions. We're more likely to get candid and thorough answers from our candidates if there is not a combative undertone. Answering questions in front of a large audience, especially prior to election, can be daunting. This event is one part of building a longer term relationship with your incoming MP - you can hold your new MP to account on their answer to your question or commitment they make at the hustings event
Personalise your questions if possible - anecdotes are an excellent way of building a relationship with your candidates, highlighting real world issues that affect you or could affect you will make it easier for them to see where you're coming from
Note: doors open from 6.15pm and refreshments will be served in the canteen beforehand.
This event is being hosted by Wirral Environmental Network and Hope for the Future. If you have any specific accessibility requirements, please email info@hftf.org.uk in advance.

FAQs
How will I know if my question has been picked?
You will receive an email by June 21st informing you that your question has been chosen. You'll be asked whether you would like to ask your question yourself using the microphone, or if you'd like the chair to ask it on your behalf. If you do not reply to the email, you will be informed that your question has been chosen at the sign in desk on the night itself.
Will I ask my question in person?
Yes. You will be invited to ask your question using the microphone provided on the night. Our team will be on hand to pass the microphones. If you do not want to ask your question yourself, inform us via email or at the check in desk and we will ensure the chair asks your question.
Can I provide separate questions for the main hall and the constituency Q&A? How do I differentiate when I submit the question?
We are only accepting pre-submitted questions for the main hall debate. In the constituency Q&A sessions, you are welcome to raise your hand and the chair will come to everyone in turn.
What topic areas can my question be on?
This event is focused on climate change and nature. There are plenty of sub-topics to climate change and nature, ranging from energy, travel and transport, flooding, housing, education, marine life etc. We trust everyone to ask appropriate questions. Where your question is not obviously relevant to the theme, the chair will ask you to raise your question in another forum.
If my question isn't asked in the main hall will it be carried over the the constituency room?
No. If your question is still relevant for the constituency Q&A, it will be your responsibility to remember your question and ask it when you move to the constituency focused sessions.
There won't be time for all the questions. How and who will select them?
In the main debate, we will have 25 minutes for pre-submitted questions, before opening up to live questions from the audience for another 15 minutes. With limited time to answer pre-submitted questions, the team at Wirral Environmental Network and Hope for the Future will choose a range of questions which enable candidates to provide answers on a range of topics areas and most relevant to the geographical area as a whole. Please save any questions which are very specifically related to one constituency to your individual constituency Q&As.
