Horizon Megagames is back with the Avenging League of Justice, the megagame of comic book superheroes. Sign up for six hours of superheroic gaming fun!

The Avenging League of Justice is the brand new megagame from designer Alex Beck, creator of Crisis in Elysium and Mirrorshades. The game is his celebration of superhero comic books and includes all the action, emotions and bizarre storylines of those worlds - as heroes battle to save the day in an explosion of sound effects and word balloons.

In this broadly cooperative game players are members of various superhero teams who make up the Avenging League of Justice, the greatest gathering of heroes the world has ever known. Each turn the heroes must face many crises that threaten the planet from Gothic City to Antarctica, and even to the Moon! They must work out which heroes to send where and who is best equipped to deal with which nefarious supervillain, before unleashing their superpowers and protecting those innocent bystanders.

Meanwhile between the action scenes the heroes have plenty to keep them busy. They must organise and run the League - deciding if it will be a chaotic collective of like-minded associates or run-like a finely honed military organisation; they also need to gather experience, knowledge and gadgets to prepare for future crises; all whilst building relationships and even finding love with the people in their lives; all of which help decide just what kind of hero they want to be.

Yet even all this four-colour excitement is not the end of the game - for all this happens inside the Horizon Comics Universe, and sales numbers for your team’s comic book are just as important as beating this month’s villain. And perhaps worse of all, a senior editor seems to be planning a huge crossover event which might just end a few heroes stories forever…

What kind of megagame is it?

The game is mostly cooperative with the players working together to stop the nefarious schemes of supervillains, with only minor rivalries between the teams and players. There is a heavy focus on roleplay as players take on the role of individual heroes with their own backstories, superpowers and supporting cast.

The core gameplay mechanic is focused on 'push your luck' dice rolling to overcome tasks and solve various crises, there is still plenty of strategy and planning required each turn when deciding on how best to use the League's resources.

The overall tone is one of fun, classic superhero tropes inspired by comic book stories from the Silver Age to the present day. There is even a mystery at the heart of the game for players to solve as the game heads towards the climatic crossover crisis...

What teams are there in the game?

There are 8 teams in the League, each with 5 players and their own nemesis -

The Urban Knights - Led by The Dark Night, this team of urban vigilantes fight a ceaseless war on crime amongst the twisted architecture of Gothic City. The team are all dedicated to The Dark Night's crusade on crime, and are made up of his proteges and closest allies. Unlike some in the League they have little time for procedure or rules, they just want to get the job done and don't mind breaking a few bones to do so. They nemesis is the twisted psychopath, The Clown.

The Justice Division - The world's most iconic heroes! Everyone has heard of Superb, Wondrous Warrior, Zoom, Green Torch and the Venusian Bounty Hunter - and most have owned a least one lunchbox with their faces on. Whenever the threat becomes too much, it is The Justice Division who rush from their orbital base to save the day with their brand of pure, honest and fair superheroics. Their nemesis is the alien emperor from another dimension, Darkside.

The Revengers - The main rivals to The Justice Division for fame and glory are The Revengers, a ragtag team of superheroes from across the world with a constantly changing and expanding line-up, all under the watchful eye of their leader Captain USA. With close links to the US government and a mansion in Metro City, the Revengers like to keep Uncle Sam's interests in mind, something that can occasionally annoy other heroes with a wider focus on all of humanity. Their nemesis is the alien warlord known as The Mad Colossus.

The X-Mutants - Feared and hated for simply being mutants, Arges leads a team of selfless heroes who have nonetheless sworn to protect the world that so distrusts them. Living in the X-Mutants Mansion, outside of New York, they protect and train young mutants whilst battling whatever superpowered threats that arise - though they will always have a particular interest in mutant threats and dangers to their community. Their nemesis is the evil mutant known as Armageddon.

Kamikaze Krew - Not every supervillain ends up with a life sentence in The Vault, a few are offered a chance of redemption and a place on the Kamikaze Krew. If they complete enough missions and save the day enough times then just maybe they will be set free. Under the watchful eye of Colonel Banner, the Krew are a somewhat anarchic and often distrusted presence amongst the rest of the League. Yet their victories, often delivered with more violence then many consider ideal, cannot be ignored. Their nemesis is the giant alien starfish, Galactor the Conqueror - it's kind of weird.

The Teen Goliaths - The first generation of sidekicks, the best buddies of The Justice Division in years past, who have now grown up and gone out on their own. Mixing the very best of superheroic tradition with a healthy does of adolescent angst, The Teen Goliaths are the biggest stars on social media and despite their age more than contribute to the League's success. Led by former Dark Night protege, Sparrow, and based in Metro City, the team look to uphold everything their mentors stand for whilst also getting all those sweet endorsement deals. Their nemesis is a mysterious mercenary known as The Assassin.

Formidable Five - A group of scientists and explorers who were drowned in cosmic rays and granted superpowers, they're known for pushing back the frontiers of knowledge and science as they battle cosmic threats and creatures from the unknown. Their leader, Doctor Formidable, is often a little aloof and always wants to be in charge whether at Formidable Five Plaza in NYC or at a League meeting. Yet the group remain popular, family friendly and icons to most - this often creates tension with the X-Mutants who can't see why people treat them different. Their nemesis is the science-mystic and ruler of Estveria, Reverend Ruin.

The Protectors - Less a team and more a group of loosely aligned allies who have to come together to defeat yet another dark threat all too often. The Protectors make Gothic City home and generally follow the suggestions of their leader, Danger Demon. They live in the shadows and prefer it there, the fame and fortune of other heroes is not for them and working with each other, let alone the rest of the League does not always come easy. Their nemesis is crime kingpin, The Boss.

The media in the game is also played by a small team of 2 reporters -

The World News Network - The premier source in the world for all superhero news, WNN constantly monitors every superhero battle, crisis and threat that arises. They also take time to cover the heroes' private lives - nothing gets views like the latest superhero affair, secret identity reveal or rumour of a secret alien love child. The people of Earth like to know they've been saved from intergalactic invasion or a trans-dimensional sea monster, yet are even more interested in the heroes' little secrets too...
