Faces Places - A People's Picturehouse Screening
Thu 20 Jun 2024 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM
The Hillcrest Centre, Bay Vue Road, Newhaven, BN9 9LH
Description
Hospitable Environment's community cinema, The People's Picturehouse, invites you to join us for a special screening of the award-winning documentary Faces Places on Thursday 20th June (7pm).
Inspired by the epic Look Again Supergraphics Festival taking place in Newhaven this summer, we were reminded of this brilliantly charming film about a similarly ambitious project that took place in France around a decade ago.
We think you'll enjoy this funny, heartwarming, and lyrical film about co-creation, the celebration of place, the joy of intergenerational friendships, and the power of communities coming together around a shared idea. All things we are passionate about at Hospitable Environment!
The late Agnes Varda, one of the leading lights of France's honored French New Wave cinema era, and professional photographer and muralist, JR, undertake a special art project. Together, they travel around France in a special box truck equipped as a portable photo booth and traveling printing facility as they take photographs of people around the country. With that inspiration, they also create special colossal mural pictures of individuals, communities and places they want to honor and celebrate. Along the way, the old cinematic veteran and the young artistic idealist enjoy an odd friendship as they chat and explore their views on the world as only they can. - K Chisholm, IMDB
2017, Documentary, certificate 12A, French with English Subtitles

Join us for this special screening as we celebrate a month of colour, co-creation and community in Newhaven. (How we wish JR could join us!)
There will be cake!
Hospitable Environment CIC is a community arts and wellbeing organisation based in Newhaven, East Sussex. We are socially engaged artists using a therapeutic, research-informed approach to our practice. We encourage people to be playful, creative and curious in exploring issues affecting them and their local environment. We hold a lot of our events at the Hillcrest Centre, where our studio is based. Proceeds from ticket sales go to supporting our work.
The Hillcrest centre is a warm and welcoming community space, with the main public areas on a single level accessible to people with mobility issues. The hall is fitted with a hearing loop. There is free parking onsite and nearby, and good public transport links within walking distance (bus network five minutes walk, Newhaven Town train station ten minutes walk).
Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome at our events, but please respect others who do not enjoy dogs so much and keep your pet under close control at all times.
