Emerging Sussex Portfolio Push - Portfolio talk and individual portfolio sessions with Bethany Plummer

Join us for a morning of tips, tricks and reviews as we delve into what makes a great portfolio. Starting with a short presentation, we'll run through some principles and guidance when it comes to laying out your ideas and projects. Some do's, some don'ts, but mostly some very practical and useful advice for pulling projects together into a concise and thoughtful presentation. Which not only shows your work in the best light, but your process, personality and passion too. We'll then spend the rest of the morning running a series of one to one sessions, to talk through projects, the layout and order of the folio plus any questions you may have along the way. Whether you're applying to university or entering the first stages of a design or creative career, this session is open to any creatives who are looking for advice on how to share their work and creativity.

You can bring a physical portfolio, printed images or digital images including, socials/website. As well as bringing along your portfolio to the event, it might be worth considering some of the following questions and thoughts:

– What projects in your portfolio do you like most and are there particular areas or projects that you'd like to develop further?
– What are your other passions, and are these related to art and design too?
– Share your process. People love to see how you've got to an idea/solution. Perhaps there is a favourite project you can talk through from start to finish, so we can understand your creative process.

– Is there a particular area of art or design that you're leaning more towards? For example, branding, type design, animation, set design? 

It's also OK if you don't know the answer yet, that's part of the process!

– Ask questions! Anything goes. Don't be afraid to ask away, whether that's about specific projects or the industry in general

I’m a brand designer and printmaker from Cornwall, UK and have spent the last 12 years working at design agencies in London and Brighton. I love to work on projects that make a positive impact and have been lucky enough to work on a range of branding projects and campaigns for garden centres, parks, museums, charities, universities, restaurants and hotels. From designing stamps for the Royal Mail to working on a visual identity for London’s famous parks - every day is always different. Alongside my day job, I also love to print at my local screenprint studio, using paper stencils, simple graphic shapes and pastel palettes. In a fast-moving digital world, nothing is better than getting back to analogue processes that force you to slow down and make things by hand.
