Emerging Sussex - Charleston Lewes & Farmhouse Creative Trip and Zine making workshop — Thurs 20 August, 12–4pm for ages 14yrs - 25yrs.
Join us for a free inspiring afternoon exploring Charleston’s two sites and the historic village of Firle as part of the Emerging Sussex programme.
Schedule
12pm — Meet at Charleston in Lewes (Southover Road) Take time to explore two exhibitions:
- Gladys Hynes (2 May – 11 Oct 2026) — The first major survey of the multidisciplinary artist, pacifist and feminist.
- Walter Sickert: Working Notes (2 May – 11 Oct 2026) — Drawings and prints by the provocative early 20th‑century British artist.
12.45pm — Travel together via bus/taxi to Charleston in Firle (The Farmhouse) 1pm — Explore the house, gardens and exhibitions:
- Virginia Woolf and the Hogarth Press (1 Apr – 6 Sept 2026) — Publishing as an intimate, courageous creative practice shaped by Virginia and Leonard Woolf.
- Guerrilla Girls (1 Apr – 6 Sept 2026) — Works by the anonymous feminist art collective, using humour and statistics to challenge power structures, shown in dialogue with the Hogarth Press.
- Charleston Farmhouse — A guided tour of the house and garden where members of the Bloomsbury Group lived, worked and developed their influential artistic and literary practices. Participants will explore the spaces that inspired artists such as Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, gaining insight into the creative environment that shaped their work.
2.15pm — Zine‑making activity led by Nick Kidd responding to the day and theme of Emerging Sussex 2026 - Curious Minds
3.45pm — Return to Lewes together by transport.
Under 16's we will need a consent from parent or guardian who will be sent a form to fill out.
