Do you have a puller or a lunger? Or maybe for peace of mind, you’d like your dog to be good with a soft muzzle? There are a lot of distractions in the world (other dogs, bikes, squirrels, kids on skateboards), and if your only option for control is a collar and leash, you might end up dragging them away while they continue to lunge, bark or stare… Did you know you’re actually rewarding your dog and encouraging them to pull on their leash?

Come learn how you and your dog can make better choices with positive reinforcement. By teaching your dog to use the correct head halter correctly, you’ll be able to come away from distractions—no matter how overwhelming!—with a positive bond. We’ll also use the same techniques for teaching your dog to wear a muzzle… it will be a positive experience for everyone!

Equipment required:

  • A proper fitting head halter* (PLEASE!! Do not follow the instructions or video on the package that comes with your head halter. The failure rate is very high and may teach your dog to hate it or be afraid of it.)
  • A clicker
  • High value treats, favorite toys
  • Patience and time

Equipment optional:

  • If muzzle training is desired, a soft basket muzzle (My favorite is a Baskerville muzzle)

*Fitting a head halter: Place the head halter on your dog and make sure the collar piece fits snugly. You should be able to fit just 1-2 fingers between the collar and your dog’s neck. It should fit like a wristband you would wear. The nose strap should slide down to meet the top of your dog’s nose leather. If it’s any more open, they may be able to paw it off.

If your dog is reactive to other dogs or won't do well in a busy environment, please enroll as an auditor only, and leave your dog at home. Thank you!

Date and Place: Saturday, June 29 - 10 a.m.- noon at the Humane Society of Huron Valley Educational Center - 3100 Cherry Hill Rd, Ann Arbor

Fee: $120 (includes your non-reactive dog and hands-on training); OR $60 for auditor-only (no dog)
